This book is an old classic but still a MUST READ for anyone who is either a:

Fan of true stories and non-fiction thrillers

Fan of suspense thrillers in general

Emjoys a good book about Espionage, Spies and the KGB vs US

Cold War Spy Anti Spy History Buffs

Computer Security Experts

Hackers and White Hat Professionals

All of the above, or even none of the above!

Truly this story is a shocking account of how vulnerable US computer systems once were. It covers the basic things that for years still remained vulnerable.

Setting

The setting was when the US and Russia were head-to-head, and when the Russian KGB was trying to steal secrets and break into US computers. It reads like a Tom Clancy spy novel, except that it was for real, making it even more fascinating.

The account is actually exciting and suspenseful and was difficult to put down at times. It’s an account about things that happened during the early 1980′s at the height of the cold war.

The most intriguing part of the book, in my opinion, is just HOW the whole KGB effort was discovered, pretty much accidentally and due to something that would usually go unnoticed to a non-inquisitive mind.

A great read, highly recommended.
Networks and Netwars – The Future of Terror Crime and Militancy

The power of a network is undisputed these days. While we enjoy all of the positives of a networked world, this book shows how and why networks can have a very significant negative effect on society.

What was particularly striking was the concept of swarming, which came apparent some years ago with distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks.

Through swarming, denial of service occurs through overwhelming a resource or several resources with overwhelming numbers and focused attacks.

Why You Should Read This Book

To understand the current and future threats and how they will probably try to operate in a network-driven world in order to disrupt it. I go back to the concept of the overwhelming swarm, like a bunch of bees or ants, or perhaps piranhas. Though insignificant in themselves, their strength is in both numbers and the buzzing frenzy they create.

I will admit there are parts of the book that seem a bit abstract and that seem to drag on, but overall it’s a good book to understand the challenges that lie ahead in our networked world. It’s all in Networks and Netwars – The Future of Terror Crime and Militancy

Information Warfare By Winn Schwartau

What is Information Warfare?

Information Warfare, as I see it, is the art of using information and knowledge as an asset and strength in the strategic, operational and tactical applications in warfare.

Info Warfare uses information as a weapon itself, via the manipulation, control and decisive application of information in order to create desired effects at every level of warfare.

Today this is called network centric warfare or effects based operations. I still prefer the term Information Warfare.

The Book Information Warfare

Though around a decade old, this book is a MUST READ for the computer security buff, hackers (white hat) and others interested in the concepts and methods of computer defense and counter hacking defense and network, computer and information security.

The book provides an excellent history and analysis as well as many thoughts and ideas about information warfare in a variety of subject areas with several well thought-out writing and possibilities or applications.

Extremely Useful

This is still very highly useful and applicable today since countering identity theft and providing top-notch computer security are getting more important as more things continue to be “network centric”.

The History of Phreaks, Crackers, Phishers, Identity Thieves and the 2600 Realm

I’d say this is the definitive guide to introduce where all of the havoc started and what was done way back when to battle against others in the information and networked world.

This is a highly interesting read and was way ahead of its time. Winn Schwartau did an excellent job and is a recognized expert in the field. He always talked about a “Electronic Pearl Harbor” later called a “Digital Pearl Harbor”, and now speaks about Global Information Warfare

I like the way Winn Schwartau thinks because as one website mentioned correctly, he thinks asymmetrically or unconventionally, outside the box, in terms of possibility, or thinking with foresight.

Everyone Must Read This Book – Information Warfare

Maker no mistake, everyone today with a PC who goes online at home or at work MUST read this book and become at least knowledgeable enough to understand why network security, information security and computer security are SO IMPORTANT.

This book is Book #2 in the order of learning about Web & Cyberspace Security and Protection, after my other recommendation mentioned below, another FavRead by the title The Cuckoo’s Egg: Tracking a Spy Through the Maze of Computer Espionage .

If You Read Nothing Else, Read This!

There is so much information here and it is in several series of short to long articles and documents rather than one single long read, based on subjects within Information Warfare as a whole. Trust me, you will enjoy this read, if nothing else, for historical intrigue and the idea of learning from history it is not repeated, because it definitely should not happen in this area! Now, get this book hard copy! Information Warfare: Second Edition

Do you know Confucius and the Golden Rule?

Many people still don’t understand who Confucius was, what he said so long ago, nor why it is still all so significant today. To remedy this, I would like to recommend the excellent book entitled Confucius: The Golden Rule.

The wisdom of Confucius is unique because Confucius basically taught the Golden rule. The time-frame of Confucius was about 500 B.C.

What I appreciated about Confucius, and about the book The Sayings of Confucius is what it emphasized as all that Confucius stood for, as well as the huge influence this ancient sage had throughout history to this very present day.

I highly recommend this book Confucius: The Golden Rule to you, and hope you will benefit from it!

My First Book Recommendation for SEO Beginners is:

Search Engine Optimization for Dummies

This SEO book is an excellent read for a beginner. It gives an outstanding introduction to the subject and is meant for the beginner who knows nothing about SEO.

I found this book flowed very well and was extremely easy and insightful. I consider it a very high-quality and fun read.

Dislike SEO ?

This book will help tremendously.

This Book Will Help You Get It Right!

The author actually makes SEO fun. The author really knows what he is talking about. In fact, many bloggers out there, in my opinion, are just reiterating what the author Peter Kent said long ago. They have just been confirming Peter’s facts all along.

For Beginners AND Experienced

I consider this book a highly informative book for both beginners and intermediate users who have experience or at least think they do. They should open their minds and be willing to listen.

This book will dispel many myths about SEO that many may be surprised about even if they have experience and think they know it all.

This is the First Book or a Back to Basics Book

Consider this SEO 101. If your SEO is not so great, get this book. If you don’t know much about SEO but need to learn fast, this book is also for you. Watch out for new and updated editions!
